Lewis was a koala who was rescued from Australia’s raging bushfires by Toni Doherty in January 2020. Although Lewis eventually succumbed to his severe burns in hospital, Toni’s heroic actions gave him a chance, and showed the world that there is hope and light even in dark times. This commemoration of the koala who died and the woman who did her best to save him affirms our deep connection with native wildlife, and our ongoing role in protecting it.

It was there they learned that in Maori culture the whale’s tail symbolises speed, strength, protection, and the bond between animal and man. Even though whales play a crucial role in the marine environment, over half of all whale species are endangered. Gillie and Marc hope people will wear this tail pendant as a reminder of its symbol of protection and the special bond between man and animal. Whales desperately need human protection and this bond must be repaired!

When Marc first met Gillie he instantly saw that her soul was wild and adventurous like his. He loved hearing about when she was a young girl in Zambia, running around barefoot observing rhinos in their natural habitat. Marc vowed that he would do whatever he could to help her save the rhino. Marc is also an adventurer and explorer at heart. In his early twenties he volunteered as an animal conservationist in East Africa during a civil war where he literally had to dodge bullets. Gillie and Marc created this pendant as a tribute to their public art sculpture – Shandu, the Buried Rhino. The multi award-winning artwork is the world’s largest rhino sculpture and has been educating people on the plight of the rhinos.

They are also dog-lovers and own a beautiful Weimaraner called Indie. So it only made sense they would create Dogman — a free spirit who is full of love and adventure.
